Madagascar

It has been clearly shown in studies by WHO and UNICEF that many countries such as India or Bangladesh, or certain African countries (Madagascar and Tanzania), have little access to drinking water in rural areas in spite of possessing abundant surface water.

We wish to transfer our conclusive, although still perfectable, experience in Cambodia to other parts of the world, with different cultures and climates.

A first exploratory mission took place in Madagascar in July, 2005 in order to identify local partners we could count on. These contacts enabled us to prepare a “Phase 1” project with the NGO “Saint Gabriel.” In Madagasgar, each region regroups several neighbourhoods or villages into a number of counties (urban or rural). The « fokontany » is the smallest administrative unit. For the “Phase 1” project, the following sites were chosen in the Toamasina (Tamative) region:

  • A1 - Analamalotra
  • A2 - Vavatenina
  • A3 - Fénérive-est
  • A4 - Foulpointe

These sites are situated for the most part on the RN5 highway or within easy access by paved roads in good condition.

Their drinking water is obtained by drilling to a depth of 20 meters – contrary to Cambodia, in Madagascar, use of underground water does not pose a problem – and energy is provided by the electric network, in spite of its deficiencies.
