More than a billion and a half people have no access to clean drinking water

900 million of these live in rural communities. Even though one of the Millenium Development Goals is to halve this number by 2015 and to martial the resources of the international community,including the World Health Organisation and UNICEF,to achieve this, there will an unacceptable number of people, who will have no choice but to drink contaminated water.

« 1001 Fontaines pour demain » is contributing to improvements in health

Rather than merely waiting and hoping for a better future, « 1001 Fontaines pour demain » is already providing a simple solution that will allow small isolated rural communities to supply their minimum requirements for drinking water by enabling them to purify available sources of water, typically surface water.

With 2 litres of purified drinking water per person per day, the risks of diseases due to contaminated water can be significantly reduced. Such diseases are too common today in rural communities and account for approximately 20% of infant mortalities.

« 1001 Fontaines pour demain » was started in 2004. In 2005 we launched pilot projects in three villages in northwestern Cambodia. These delivered very convincing results. Based on these results, we deployed the solution to a further eight villages, giving a total number of 10,000 beneficiaries. In 2008, we shall be deploying many more « fountains » in Cambodia and starting a pilot project in Madagascar.

Our projects involve collaboration with many different partners on site – 10 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are working with us on the implementation of our projects in Cambodia, as well as providing financial assistance.
